The audiovisual library

Conversations recorded on tape may also help us to study the history of literature; such – so far perhaps little appreciated – audio documentation has by now become an organic part of literary museology. The collection of more than 5,000 recordings in our Audio Library is being gradually enriched, not only by interviews of literary importance but also by the receiving of bequests containing audio recordings, sometimes archive films and recently video recordings. »

The library

The Library of the Museum is a research library that functions primarily as a centre for original editions, illustrated books, books dedicated or annotated by the authors, and writers’ full personal libraries. It is commonly known that the Hungarian scientific collections (e.g. the National Museum) and the Petőfi House, a memorial house dedicated to the poet and considered to be the predecessor of our Museum, were established through public offers and major book collections. »

The manuscript archive

The Manuscript Archive is one of the largest collections of its kind in Hungary. Compared with the national, academic and church manuscript archives, it was established quite late, so – with regard to the collection customs of the aforementioned associate institutions – we put the main emphasis on the 19th and 20th centuries and on contemporary Hungarian literature. We inherited the basis of the 19th-century Hungarian collection from the Petőfi House. Our Manuscript Archive preserves Sándor Petőfi’s 3,700 and Mór Jókai’s 5,000 pages of correspondence and manuscripts. »
